About the Schools
Samuel L. Tucker Elementary School - Principal Loretta Scott
Samuel L. Tucker Elementary School first opened in September 2000 and has been the first new school to open in the City of Alexandria within the last 30 years. Between 600 to 700 students attend Tucker ever since its opening. The school consists of 28 classrooms, a science lab, art room, two music rooms, a media center equipped with a computer lab and television studio, a gymnasium and a cafeteria. The school building is also unique because it offers teacher planning areas and extended learning areas for special student projects. There is also a featured playground that has a covered awning so students can enjoy themselves, even when the weather is inclement. Adjacent to the school is a 12 acre park that contains a ball field, another playground, a tennis court, picnic area and and environmental learning area.
William Ramsay Elementary School - Principal Rosario Casiano
William Ramsay Elementary School was built in 1957 and has had several additions to the school in 1963, 1977, 1990 and 2001. Not only is William Ramsay an elementary school, it also serves as a community with a newly built modern recreational center. William Ramsay could be described as a school with a diverse student population and having a supportive neighborhood community as well as receiving assistance through local businesses and business partners, such as Mark Winkler Management and The Links Inc. The academic program that William Ramsay offers includes: reading, language arts, mathematics, social studies and science. In addition, the school offers:
- After school tutorial classes for students who need extra help.
- Art instruction with a certified art teacher once a week.
- Vocal music instruction with a certified music teacher once a week.
- Instrumental music lessons beginning with fourth grade.
- Physical education classes by a certified P.E. teacher once a week.
- Strong program for talented and gifted children who perform above their grade level academically or who special ability in art and/or music.
- Family life instruction at age-appropriate levels.
- English as a second language classes.
- Special education programs.
Like all the other schools in the City of Alexandria, the school system launches a multi-year, multi-million dollar initiative to bring the latest in technologies into the classroom, including computers, telephones, multimedia, internet and CD-rom research capabilities. William Ramsay also offers before, after and other student programs, as well as school support teams, meal programs and community programs.
Francis C. Hammond Middle School - Principals Keisha Boggan (FCH1), Arthur Williams (FCH2) and Sara Schafer (FCH3)
Francis C. Hammond Middle School is located off Seminary Road. The school was built in 1956 and was originally built as a high school. In 1979, Hammond became both a middle school and a high school but transitioned solely into a middle school in 1993. More recently in 2009, the school is now comprised of 3 middle schools which are referred to as: FCH1, FCH2 and FCH3. Hammond has been recognized in the past with the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce Excellence in Education Award as well as the most improved school by the Virginia Department of Education. The academic programs that are offered at Hammond include mathematics, English, social studies, science and several other courses. Hammond is also advanced in technology. The City of Alexandria launched a multi-year, multi-million dollar initiative to bring the latest technology in the classroom which includes computers, telephones, multimedia, Internet and CD-rom. There are also computer labs and several classrooms throughout the school that are equipped with computers. Hammond offeres special academic programs for example Honors, as well as before & after school programs.
T.C. Williams High School - Principal Suzanne Maxey
T.C. Williams High School is recognized as one of the most comprehensive and respected high schools in the country and its facilities and top students compare favorably with best private schools. T.C. Williams-Minnie Howard Campus are for 9th grade students and T.C. Williams are for 10th-12th grade students. Located about 10 to 15 minutes away from Watergate at Landmark, T.C Williams offers a curriculum of 188 courses and is one of the few Virginia schools that teaches Organic Chemistry. Not only that, but 5 years of French, German, Latin and Spanish are offered. The City of Alexandria also launched the same initiative to bring the latest technology to T.C. Williams which include computers, telephones, multimedia, Internet and CD-rom capabilities. In addition to technological advances, this school offers a media center, fiber optic network, completely automated library and connections to the Internet. Because of that, T.C. Williams is taking its place as one of the best technologically equipped schools in the country. T.C. Williams offers co-curriculum programs which include 17 interscholastic sports and 55 clubs & organizations such as the National Honor Society. Lockheed Martin represents T.C. Williams as a business and community partner.
